Moroccan Berber rugs are handwoven by Berber tribes in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco, known for their use of natural wool and symbolic, geometric patterns that tell personal stories using local craftsmanship and materials.
Each rug is a unique piece, intricately woven by hand by Berber women.
They are traditionally made from the wool of sheep and goats from the Atlas Mountains, known for its softness and durability.
Colours are derived from natural sources like plants and berries, including henna, pomegranate, and tealeaves, as well as the natural black wool.
The weaving process can take weeks to a year depending on the rug's size and complexity. Patterns are woven from memory and represent personal experiences, family, and life events.
Every rug is unique because women weave their own designs and stories into them, often without sketches. In traditional nomadic life, they were practical because they could be rolled up and transported.
